How To Score A Free Thanksgiving Turkey

In less than two weeks, most Americans - nearly nine in ten (88%) will sit down for a turkey dinner to celebrate Thanksgiving, according to the University of Illinois. That makes a total of 46-million turkeys people will be eating. And since the price of turkeys has risen nearly 57%, from $0.97 per pound back in 2006 to $1.52 per pound 10 years later, people are looking for ways to save on their birds. So some supermarkets are doing turkey giveaways and special promos, like these:

ShopRite - This grocery store chain is mostly in the Northeast and this year, they’re offering customers a free ShopRite All Natural Frozen Turkey up to 21 pounds, or a discount on any other fresh, frozen, or kosher turkey up to 21 pounds. And the discount is pretty sweet, $1.49 per pound off, so you’re only paying 50-cents a pound. To qualify, all you need to do is sign up for their Price Plus loyalty program, and spend at least $400 in stores between October 15 and November 23.

Acme Supermarkets - These stores are also in the Northeast and their deal is offering customers a coupon for a free Signature Farms of Jennie-O Basted Frozen Turkey, from 10 to 22 pounds, or a frozen turkey breast (from four to seven pounds, after they spend $100 or more in a single transaction through November 16.

Weis Supermarkets - These stores in New Jersey and Pennsylvania are offering a rewards program deal that gives you 10 points for every $50 spent. Once you have 50 points - which means you’ve spent $250 now through Thanksgiving - you cash in your points for a fresh turkey up to 20 pounds, a fresh or frozen turkey breast, or other options, including a boneless ham up to six pounds.

Just keep in mind that not all Thanksgiving grocery promos are actually good deals. If you’re unsure about an offer, use apps like Grocery Pal to find out.
