Empire actor Jussie Smollett turned himself in to Chicago police at 5am this morning (Feb 21st) and is now under arrest for filing a false police report. This is a felony disorderly conduct charge that carries a sentence of probation, or up to three years if he is convicted. This could also force the actor to pay for the cost of the investigation.
Following three weeks of mounting suspicions, the 36 year old changed from being the seemingly sympathetic victim of a hate crime to being accused of fabricating the entire thing. The Chicago police superintendent will hold a news conference this afternoon, and Smollett is expected to appear in court later today. The black actor, who is gay, claimed he was assaulted by two masked men who yelled racist and homophobic slurs at him. He also said his attackers poured what he believed was bleach over him and put a noose around his neck.
“Empire” producers are reportedly weighing whether to suspend Jussie Smollett now that he’s been charged with filing a false police report. The network had been standing firmly behind the actor.
