Kelly Ripa Says Her Son Is Experiencing ‘Extreme Poverty’ After Moving Out

Kelly Ripa Honored With Star On The Hollywood Walk Of Fame

Kelly Ripa and Mark Conseulos' oldest son, Michael, has officially moved out. The 22-year-old moved to Bushwick, Brooklyn following his graduation from New York University. Like most people in their early twenties, Michael is apparently struggling with his finances. As his mom tells it, Michael is experiencing "extreme poverty" for the first time in his life.

“I think he loves the freedom," Ripa said of Michael's new apartment. "He hates paying his own rent and he’s chronically poor. I don’t think he ever really experienced extreme poverty like now.”

She also revealed her parents send her three children, Michael, Lola and Joaquin, twenty dollars for every holiday. Now that Michael is living on his own, his mom says he's more eager than ever for that extra cash. “He’s called three times, ‘Halloween envelope arrived?’ ” she joked. “Just so he can have electricity. He’s experiencing being an adult.”

The TV host faced some backlash for her comments on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Many people took ire with Ripa comparing her son's Brooklyn apartment to extreme poverty. As Page Six points out, Michael grew up in his parents New York City penthouse, which they sold in 2014 for $20 million. After selling their SoHo penthouse, the family relocated to a $27 million penthouse on the Upper East Side.
