Alicia Keys Says 4-Year-Old Son Worried He'd Be Judged Over His Nail Polish

Alicia Keys has some thoughts about her 4-year-old son's insecurities over his newly-rainbow-hued manicure.

On Sunday (November 10), Keys, 38, took to Instagram to share an almost-three-minute video of herself ranting about her trip to a nail salon with Genesis. During the story, the singer revealed that the toddler was initially excited about "rainbow nails," but after getting the job done, he turned to his mother and shared his concern over judgement. "He looked at me and said, ’Mommy, I don’t want this on my nails,'" she recalled. "And I said, ’Why? You were so sure. You’re good.’ And he was like, ’People are not gonna like it.' Can you believe this?! Four years old! He's four, and he already understands the concept that somebody is going to judge him because he chose rainbow colors on his nails."

Keys, who appeared at this year's Stonewall 50 event in New York City, went on to reveal her motherly advice to Genesis about how many men paint their nails and how he should be proud of his creative nature. "The way I see it, there is masculine and there are feminine energies inside of us all, period," she explained. "It gets concerning to me that we can’t just explore these different sides of ourselves. These different energies that are within us."

"Even for me, myself, I oftentimes express the masculine energy that’s inside of me," she continued. "And, all the time, if that happens, there are the judgments, and there’s the stereotypes, and there are all the energies that come towards that. And for my boys, [it’s] similar, if they want to express the feminine energy that’s inside of them. There’s all of these judgments, and all these rules, and stereotypes, and vibes."

Meanwhile, Swizz Beatz was quick to agree with his wife, admitting that they champion their son to explore himself in any way he wishes. "He’s a young King and he can explore and express his creativity at anytime! We support it as his parents," he commented.
