A Fractured Family Back Together: The O'Neals

This is an important story because being estranged from family sucks. Not because of the pandemic, but because sometimes families just can't get along, and it's painful.

Ryan O'Neal (remember "Love Story" with Ali MacGraw, and "Paper Moon" with his daughter, Tatum O'Neal, pictured here?) has reunited with his daughter Tatum and her three kids for the first time in nearly 20 years. Here's the photo shared by his grandson Sean McEnroe on Instagram. Sean is Tatum’s son with tennis ace John McEnroe.

This group hasn't been together in 20 years! The last time they got together was the 30-year “Paper Moon” reunion in 2003, a movie O’Neal and his daughter Tatum starred in together. She was just 11 years old when she collected her Oscar in 1974 for the film. Her dad Ryan was jealous and angry because he didn't win for his part in the film, and because his kid got all the attention, and he couldn't deal, and treated her bad after that. Tatum went on to have addiction problems through her life. Their relationship has long been fractured, going through lengthy periods of estrangement…hopefully now they are back in a good place.

Grandson Sean posted this pic, along with the caption, “I could cry tears of gratitude that everyone in this photo is still alive and that we were all able to come together again after so many years of hardship. The entire West Coast is burning, but if the O’Neals can reconcile, truly anything is possible.” The possibilities are endless.
